[7.25/10] 50/50 (2011)

50/50 (2011)

QuickRating: As inspirational and funny as it's depressing, "50/50" is an emotional roller coaster ride full of sadness, hope, and desperation, that despite its dark tone, fearlessly dares to joke about death, but at the same time has a huge respect for the precious life we all care about. Gordon-Levitt delivers the performance of his career, and Anna Kendrick is awkwardly likable, but the film is let down by Rogen's annoying performance, and the silliness of his character.

I tapped this as one of my best because it really struck a chord with me. Not only is JGL one of my favorite actors, but the story really encapsulated the experience of going through cancer. I took care of family with this dreadful disease and there really are bizarrely funny moments that just get you in the midst of all the sickness. Rogen was the counter-balance for me and I felt his ridiculousness perfectly underscored JGL's performance. Loved Anna Kendrick as well. Her awkwardness was touching. Awesome review, though. :)

JGL's performance wasn't overly serious, so it didn't need to be underscored by Rogen's ANNOYING character. He seemed out of place for me, and broke the otherwise perfect balance of the movie.
Cancer is a terrifying disease and I was fascinate by the way JGL character handled it. So uplifting.. and sad at the same time.

Another one I want to see that won't play down here.

I'm a cancer survivor. Treatment is when I truly learned to laugh. I can't explain it, but maybe it's about laughing in the face of death. The humor is generally pretty sick and twisted to anyone not in the same place shoes. From the previews I saw it looked like someone finally got it right and was able to depict all the fear, anger, frustration and humor that go into surviving not only this dread disease but the treatment as well.

I come to trust your reviews, most days we're on the same page. I appreciate it.

Thank you for the kind words, and I'm glad that we're on the same page regarding movies. :)

So excited to see this one!! I really regret not seeing it in theaters but Gordon-Levitt rarely disappoints or never actually and this story is simply amazing. I'm so glad that Hollywood attempted and succeeded at making this rather sensitive film.

Nicole, this one should be on your must-see list. It's a wonderful movie, but also quite sad at the same time. You're right, Hollywood film-making has never been so sensitive. :)
